New Things I've Been Canning

Pictured above: Cute little half-pints of Apple Pie Jam and quarts of strawberry lemonade concentrate (just add water),

These adorable little jars (4 oz) contain Spicy Pickled Garlic.  Yum!!

These are a few of the new items we will be featuring at the Washington Community Farmer's Market this weekend.  One of the other vendors has told me that she will have a new item, sprouts!  Our little market is so well rounded.  There are many opportunities at the market  to create entire meals from just those items available at each week's market.

Things to do with Seasoned Bread Crumbs

The last few weeks at the market have featured some yummy veggies like egg plant and okra, both of which can be wonderful when paired with seasoned bread crumbs.  So I decided to make seasoned bread crumbs for this week's market.  Of course fried okra is a delicious side dish that can be even more wonderful with yummy seasoned bread crumbs.   And when you pair sliced egg plant with seasoned bread crumbs, you have the makings of some wonderful Egg Plant Parmasan.  But I think my favorite way to use these yummy seasoned bread crumbs is in meatloaf or meatballs.  If you substitute the seasoned bread crumbs for plain bread crumbs in your favorite recipe and add a half cup parmasan cheese, you get a wondeful Italian Meatloaf or meatballs.  Join us this week at the market for all sorts of amazing ingredients for this week's meals.

Veggie and Egg Burrito

Our Farmer's Market is a really little one.  We are new this year, only a few months old, and in a very small town, so that is to be expected I suppose.  Still, we average only 7 or so vendors each week, and some of those are craft vendors.  With such small offerings, it can be hard to see the market as a place to get your family's groceries, but it can be.  Honestly, that is one of the reasons I decided to start this blog.  I thought it could be helpful to offer recipes and meal suggestions featuring items available each week at the market.

Pictured  below is a veggie and egg "burrito" that my family loves.  We make it for supper at least once a week using our pastured eggs and any in season veggies.  We simply caramelize an onion and the veggies in butter with a little Celtic Sea Salt then scramble some eggs, add a little cheese, then wrap the mixture in a tortilla.  Right now our market is featuring pastured eggs, squash, zucchini, egg plant, tomatoes and peppers that would all be wonderful in this burrito.    All you would need from the store is cheese, an onion and the tortillas (though you could leave the tortillas out if you are low carb).  For a little heat, you could serve it with some homemade Chow-chow (also available at the market) and have some of the wonderful sweets or watermelon from the market for dessert.

If you shop at our market, I'd love to hear what you do with the items you purchase.  You can leave a comment below and share all your creative ideas.

New Blog

This is the blog for my new Farmer's Market business.  I call my business "The City Girl's Market Garden" since I live in town and grow a garden for the market.  I am hoping that this blog will serve as a place for me to post happenings in my garden, lists of what will be available at the market and also recipes and menu ideas for using the items available at the market and other seasonal items.  I hope to post a few times a week, so check back often.
